Frequently asked questions

The things people ask us most about the sanctuary, the herd and how to help.

About the sanctuary

What is Riverview Rescue and Sanctuary?

Riverview is the only cow rescue and sanctuary in the state of Nebraska, and a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It gives rescued cows a safe home for the rest of their lives.

It was founded and is run by Allison, who was raised to be a third-generation beef farmer and chose to save cows instead.

Where are you located?

We are based in the Hastings, Nebraska area.

Who looks after the cows?

Allison does, almost entirely on her own. There is no paid staff and no corporate backing. She lives an hour from the herd and drives out every day to feed them, check on them and give them the care they need.

Why does a cow sanctuary matter?

A cow can naturally live 15 to 20 years, yet most are given less than two. We believe every sentient being has feelings, emotions and family, and that all deserve a happy life.

The herd

How many cows have you rescued?

Thirty-two so far.

Meet the herd

Where do the cows come from?

Each one has a different story. Some were bound for slaughter. Others were sick, old, neglected or abandoned.

It began with three: a newborn steer named Jeffrey, the herd's oldest cow, Big Mama, and her calf. When more cows were about to be sold, Allison saved them too.

Who is Jeffrey?

Jeffrey the Steer is where it all began. When he was born, Allison agreed to help care for him only if she could keep him. Today he weighs roughly 4,400 pounds and has his own Instagram, @jeffreythesteer.

Will the cows ever be sold or sent to slaughter?

No. Riverview is a sanctuary, and the animals are here for life. In Allison's words: “No cow in my care would ever be lost again.”

Donating

How can I donate?

You can give by Venmo, PayPal (with or without a PayPal account), Zelle, Donorbox or GoFundMe. Every option is on our Donate page.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Riverview Rescue and Sanctuary is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 39-3925319. Gifts are deductible to the extent allowed by law. Keep the receipt from Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Donorbox or GoFundMe for your records.

Where does my money go?

Every dollar goes directly to food, shelter and medical care for the cows: hay and feed, vet visits, bedding, and safe shelter to get the herd out of the weather.

Can I set up a recurring gift?

Yes. On Donorbox you can choose to give regularly when you donate. Hay and feed bills keep coming all year, so steady gifts help the most.

Give with Donorbox

Is a small gift really worth it?

Yes. No gift is too small. In Allison's words: “If you can donate, even $5, it helps more than you know.”

Will my employer match my gift?

Many employers match donations to 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Ask yours, and give them our EIN: 39-3925319.

Other ways to help

What does the herd need most right now?

Hay. Drought and fires have pushed hay prices up, and a herd this size goes through it fast.
